Dead Hippie by Spooked Kooks surfboard review

I aim to review boards and products for the average knockabout surfer (or ‘kook’ like me) without all the technical terms and manoeuvres.

I’m stoked to be back reviewing surfboards again; this time, I decided to step up to the plate with the Dead Hippie 7’0 x 22” x 2 7/8” (53L) by Spooked Kooks as this board was the missing piece in my Spooked Kooks quiver. I have now ridden all of the Spooked Kooks range, and if you have any questions about the different shapes, sizes or froth levels, please feel free to ask away.

Those who have been following me for a while know that I am a massive fan of the Spooked Kook brand, as they are the company behind environmentally friendly Softboards. They achieve this because all the hard plastics in their boards are made from 100% recycled post-consumer plastic waste. This includes the ‘Eco slick’, leash plug, fins and fin key; this coincides perfectly with my Landfill surfboard workshops.

The latest version of the Dead Hippy with the updated textured deck, which was an absolute game changer. Previously, with soft boards, I found the deck a bit slippery on the first few surfs, but this newly added feature eliminates the need for wax. It's unbelievable how effective this is out in the surf.

After a couple of surfs, I can see why the Dead Hippy is their most popular model. It is an excellent mid-length at 7’0 for a more intermediate surfer or Grom, but if you are learning, I would recommend getting the 8’0 for that shorter learning curve. It has a touch of class as it turns beautifully and is super responsive. I found it a fun alternative board if you want to mix it up from your regular shortboard or fish.

This board truly shines in smaller and fuller waves, boasting easy paddling and a sweet spot that is forgiving for those still mastering the art of surfing. The vibrant colour options add to the appeal, making it a tough choice due to the aesthetic allure they all share, turning heads on any beach stroll.

During one memorable session with the Dead Hippy, experimenting with foot positioning revealed its exceptional stability. Given my less-than-perfect footwork, the board's added stability proved to be a welcome companion as I confidently moved up and down the board, which is what I enjoy trying to do riding the bigger boards and a great way to generate extra speed.

The Dead Hippie is value for money, starting at $730, with previous models still available at a discounted rate, so act fast! If this is going to be your first Surfboard, then definitely check out the FREE Learn to Surf videos that come with every purchase, as there are so many helpful tips to get you up and riding.
