With the help of the iAccelerate, we devised a plan to help educate surfers at a grassroots level about the importance of extending the life of our favourite crafts.

With an estimated 25 million new surfboards made globally, where do these boards end up once they have served their purpose? Are they collecting dust in a garage, replaced with a newer model, or discarded to make room?
Hi, my name is Mat, and I am the owner of Creative Kooks. Our vision is for no more surfboards to end up in Landfill, so how can we achieve this?
At Creative Kooks, we take old, unwanted surfboards and give them a new life by turning them into unique artworks with the help of participants.
We run workshops at various Early learning centres, Schools, and large events, such as Music festivals and council events. We are coming to Patagonia today to collaborate and spread the sustainable message further.
We intend to run these workshops out of large surf stores across Australia to spread the message at a grassroots level and reiterate the importance of repurposing our favourite crafts.
Not only do our workshops repurpose old surfboards, but we also have the added fun of our land-based learn-to-surf program for the children, which consists of yoga, mindfulness and balance board work to simulate the surfing experience.
With Patagonia alongside us, we intend to bring additional people to local stores to attend Open-day workshops. This outside-the-box thinking will increase sales and build a tighter, Greener community with a positive message, which will undoubtedly benefit Patagonia and the Surfstores, who are undoubtedly going through a tougher time in this climate.
Because community is the driving force of what we do, We bring people together to create something beautiful while also providing a platform for people to discard their unwanted boards instead of going to the tip. This provides a guilt-free approach.
Our vision with this new relationship is to run a Pilot program funded by Patagonia, where we activate at ten major Surf shops across NSW that are stockists of your brand. We will ensure that these events are heavily promoted beforehand to bring more people into the physical store and save more boards from landfill.
We know these workshops have been well received, as the feedback from the community has been excellent, so it is a safe investment on your end.
Once the Surfboards have been turned into Art, we will donate one of the boards to the Surfshop to say thanks and remind the Community of their amazing efforts and another to a participant on the day.
So far, Creative Kooks have run multiple workshops over the past year and has currently saved 185 surfboards from landfill; we intend to get this number a lot higher with your help.
We are not eco-warriors but surfers who want to give back to the sport that we love. We hope that if we each do a small part, we will make a significant change. Thank you.
