We’re stoked to share an exciting project we have been working on with Sutherland Shire Council! Instead of dull council rule signs that go unnoticed, we’ve found a way to make skatepark rules stand out while engaging the local community.
Rules at skateparks often get ignored, blending into the background. But now, every skatepark in the Shire features these rules on custom-painted skateboard decks. This makes the parks look amazing and gives young skaters a sense of ownership and pride in their space, as they were the ones who helped decorate them.
We worked alongside the Sutherland Shire Crime Prevention Unit to develop this initiative. At each of the skateparks or local shopping centres, depending on the weather, we set up our bright gazebo tables and chairs with a stack of SurfPaints so that the young people could stop and get creative during riding sessions.
This success got us thinking—what if we collaborated with other councils to showcase their custom rules? Even with beach safety being a hot topic down our way, why not design beach safety signs the same way? Imagine vibrant, hand-painted boards showing important safety info regarding Rips, etc, while celebrating local beach culture.
We are excited about the opportunity to display beach safety rules on our repurposed landfill surfboards, minimising our environmental impact. These boards will inform beachgoers about the importance of water safety and rip current knowledge, and they can also serve as flotation devices in emergencies.
