'The Bullet' a collaboration by Ocean & Earth and Stacey, Surfboard review by The South Coast Kook

I was lucky enough to be one of the first average punters to test out ‘The Bullet’ by Stacey. This is another one of the amazing collaborations that Ocean & Earth have up their sleeve.

‘The Bullet’ is a collaborative design between Lee Stacey and Dakoda Walters and is available in the sizes 5’0, 5’4, 5’8, 6’0, 6’4. I grabbed the 5’8 at 32.5L because the brief that Ocean & Earth wrote about this board is, that it is the perfect board for the grom stepping off his soft board into a more performance thruster board, while doubling as a fun twin fin for Dad or Mum.

My sole purpose for ‘The Bullet’ was to use it as a twin. I have the option to do this because the fin box system is a futures box. So if you have any futures fins you are set to play around. I decided if I was going to test this board out properly I would ride it as the traditional thruster with the stock fins first, to see how it went.

The Bullet’ is not your average soft board. It screams performance even with the stock fins. So if you are a beginner, I would suggest to check out the other boards that Ocean and Earth have to offer, but for the intermediate to advance surfers, ‘The Bullet’ packs a whole lot of fun in its small shape!

I wouldn’t say that it has the best paddle power, remembering that I bought the 5’8 so it is a lot smaller then the rest of my quiver, but being an epoxy foam board it sits higher in the water, so where you lose on the paddle power you gain on the extra float. So it kind of evens itself out.

My first proper surf I had on it was at a local reef break on low tide. Usually I would be stressing about washing my board across the rocks and potential for cracks and chips. But with ‘The Bullet’ that fear disappears knowing that the foam layering will with-stand the hits. And if you’re like me, and tend to do drop in on your mates for a bit of fun, knowing that they won’t get hurt.

The Bullet’ is very fast for a foam board… I guess that’s why they called it ‘The Bullet’! It absolutely flies down the line. It was a bit chattery on the bigger sized waves but keep in mind I was riding it with the stock fins. I could navigate the wave with ease because of the refined rails and taking off on ‘The Bullet’ was met with a soft landing under the foot.

So if you are a confident surfer coming back from an injury or an older person who has done heaps of surfing with bad knee or back ‘The Bullet’ will help you get back to where you left off quicker.

Swapping the stock fins for Free falls Cosmic Twin was a game changer! They held me a lot better on the wave and generated even more speed. Since changing fins I haven’t noticed any more chatter on the bigger waves. It has given ‘The Bullet’ a bit more playfulness on your back foot and It has shown me how versatile this board can be.

I am also curious how it would ride with upright twin fins and trailer set up, or maybe I am just looking for excuses to surf this board more.

The Bullet’ has the same textured deck skin on the top layer of the board as other Ocean & Earth foamies. If you have read any of my previous reviews you would have seen that I have mentioned this previously with the ‘Happy Hour’ and ‘The General’. So I knew how grippy and effective it is without wax.

‘The Bullet’ retails at $525 and deserves a solid 8/10.
